You know those kids who yell and laugh and swing from the bars on the subway - it's okay!  They're having fun!  That dude who just ran a yellow while talking on his cell phone? Hey, he's busy! The cheating spouse didn't physically hurt anybody, so what's the big deal?
 
We've done it - we've successfully turned social irresponsibility into a desirable role-model trait.  After all, there's no such thing as society, just individual people looking out for their own interests.  We just keep doing that, all will be well with the world. 
 
It must be true.  After all, I read it in Atlas Shrugged.  Or heard about it from someone else.  Same difference.

Last year Google had an M&M problem. So as it does with most dilemmas, the Internet giant put its data wizards into action.
 
Employees were eating too much of the free candy and that, the firm surmised, might hinder efforts to keep workers healthy and happy.
 
So in what could be called Project M&M, a special ops force of behavioral science PhDs conducted surveys of snacking patterns, collected data on the proximity of M&M bins to any given employee, consulted academic papers on food psychology, and launched an experiment.
 
What if the company kept the chocolates hidden in opaque containers but prominently displayed dried figs, pistachios and other healthful snacks in glass jars? The results: In the New York office alone, employees consumed 3.1 million fewer calories from M&Ms over seven weeks. That’s a decrease of nine vending machine-size packages of M&Ms for each of the office’s 2,000 employees.
The titan of Internet data is taking its own medicine, using the data analysis that has helped the company produce $55 billion in revenue each year to improve the morale and productivity of its 40,000 employees. Many tech companies offer perks such as free snacks or cafeteria food. But at Google, almost every benefit is broken down into crunchable, poll-able or graphicable data, including salaries, the length of maternity leave, the size of the plates used at the food bar or even the squishy goal of workplace happiness.
 
Google says it’s too hard to prove that the M&M experiment directly led to a svelter staff or whether employees felt happier just because they were eating less of the calorie-packed snack. It won’t talk about how many people leave the company each year.
 
But the Mountain View, Calif., firm often ranks high on best places to work surveys by Fortune magazine and other business publications. And the company credits efforts like the M&M project as a testament to the benefits of science over feel-good ideas or gut instinct that have dominated human resource philosophy.
 
“Data can be a way at getting to the truth. When people talk about data, it becomes an abstract of machines, robots and terabytes of information. But really, it’s just facts; numbers that describe a reality,” said Laszlo Bock, senior vice president of People Operations, the group overseeing most human resource issues.
 
Of course, the use of data doesn’t negate a manager’s instinct or common sense, he said. In August of last year, Google started giving death benefits because it was “the right thing to do,” Bock said — a decision that was not based on an in-depth data analysis. The benefit grants the partners of deceased employees half of that person’s pay for a full decade. But too often, Bock said, leaders at other firms rely on what feels right without considering the truths that can be laid bare in the collection of data.
Some workplace experts question the lengths that Google is going to analyze every corner of its offices. Some of the lab experiments are remarkably obvious. If you put out more free fruit, of course it will be taken. And some analysts question whether the free meals, napping stations and inexpensive massages make people stay in the office longer, perpetuating a work-obsessed culture that has eaten into family life and community.
 
“You have to question the expectations behind such perks. If they are giving you dinner and lunch, you are probably not expected to leave at that time. Perks aren’t just about fun and games,” said Miriam Salpeter, owner of Keppie Careers, a job search and social media consulting firm. “They may have really good motives, but for a for-profit business, the motives are ultimately to make a profit, and everyone is a cog in that wheel for creating the good ideas, useful tools and other things the company is creating.”
 
Yet other experts say Google is trying to signal that it cares about employees. And in a dour economy where pensions, health care and other core benefits are being cut to the bone, Google’s efforts are welcomed by new employees.
 
“There may be a symbolic importance in the M&Ms, where an employee could interpret the experiment as part of a culture that cares for them, where leaders are connected to its people,” said John Nelson, a career expert and author of “What Color is My Parachute for Retirement.”
For Google, it’s more than just the candy that employees consume. In another case, the company tried to get workers to drink more water. So it stashed bottled water on eye-level shelves and behind clear glass. It then put sugary sodas on the bottom shelves of refrigerators and behind frosted glass. After several weeks, water consumption increased 47 percent while the calories consumed by drinking sugary beverages fell 7 percent.
 
Some of these results were displayed on signs in hallways and in the cafeterias for Google’s stats-loving employees. In a follow-up survey, Google said 70 percent of its 40,000 employees said they like knowing nutritional facts.
 
In the New York office alone, there are four full cafeterias and 35 “microkitchens.” Co-founder Sergey Brin insists that every Google employee be no more than 200 feet away from free food. The idea is that eating brings people together, and new products and services could be imagined when engineers and business leaders meet at kitchens and dining halls.
 
But even the plates at the food bars have been Google-ized. To get people to eat smaller portions, the staff experimented with plate sizes, providing a big one and a small one. Nearly one-third of employees chose the smaller plates and didn’t go back for more servings. When Google posted the result in cafeteria signs, the overall use of small plates increased a further 50 percent.
 
This helped the company’s goal of reducing the calories consumed by its workers.
 
“With a company as big as Google, you have to start small to make a difference. We apply the same level of rigor, analysis and experimentation on people as we do the tech side,” said Jennifer Kurkoski, a PhD in organizational behavior and a member of Google’s HR team commonly called “People Ops” within the company.
 
Engineering manager Mike Harm said he doubts the free banana chips and granola would make the difference in deciding where someone works.
 
But Harm, who has been working on Google’s cloud storage app for six years, admits he likes the paternal nudge of Google putting dried seaweed snacks and ripened pears within easy grasp.
 
Chocolate peanut butter cups and potato chips are still available. But they are stashed in drawers.
“What I love is that I don’t have to ever think twice about the coffee beans in this machine being stocked,” he said banging on a high-end Italian espresso maker in one of the New York office’s kitchens. “It’s removing the obstacles of my day to just let me focus on what I want to do.”
 
“It’s about the work, not the fact that I get free food. I have a Manhattan apartment; I can afford to buy Pringles at the corner market,” he added, munching on air-popped plain popcorn.
 
Inside Google’s offices, the energy is as kinetic as the streets of Manhattan. Employees dart down halls on scooters. Hallways are busy with fast-walking employees cradling MacBooks in their arms.
In the Watertower Cafe, one of the cafeterias, murals of the cityscape blend with massive windows that open into views of Manhattan rooftops. Planters of live ferns and rocks are scattered throughout the dining area so that it feels like al fresco dining.
 
Even New York’s famously gritty subway air vents have been re-created. On one floor, designers put wads of chewed gum, dust and dirt under the ornamental vents to make them look authentic.
 
The company won’t say how much it spends on such perks. It’s guarded about its People Ops team, which began in 2006 as the company exploded in size. And it won’t disclose the number of people who worked on the M&M project.
 
Spokeswoman Chrissy Persico said Google does not use such benefits to keep people in the office.
 
Yet the effects are clear to engineers such as Alex Golynski, who was grabbing a heaping cup of raspberries and espresso from a Lego-inspired micro-kitchen near his cubicle on a recent afternoon.
Golynski darts around the office in one of the freely available Google scooters. He would have picked fruit over M&Ms even if the candy were easy to reach, he said. And he’s never stopped to think much about the nutritional data displayed about the candy.
 
“The food is convenient,” said Golynski, who has worked on search engineering for five years. “So I spend time at my desk,” he added, scooting away.

Value Adding Teachers and the Future of Labour


 
 
 
I love teachers - literally,  My family is rife with them.  They are passionate, compassionate and above all, they're perfectionists.  These teachers are incredibly judgemental - not of others, though, but of themselves.  If one of "their kids" doesn't do well, they take it personally, even if there are a multitude of other mitigating factors.  Success lies in their hands and if it isn't achieved, they blame themselves.  On the other hand, when kids do well - when five years in the future, those kids and their parents come up to them and say "thank you", that's the reward they cherish the most.
 
Everything else - the money, the time off, the expectations and mandatory seminars and micromanagement or support of administration - is viewed through that lens. 
 
This is why I think both Unions and those that oppose them have it wrong - they're trying to force teachers into the labour fights of a previous generation instead of supporting teachers in the way that would really advance their labours now.
 
Teachers don't want to make money - they need to have sustainability and some breathing space and all that kind of thing - but what they really want is to add value.  They will invest more of themselves than is perhaps healthy to do, but they do it because they care.
 
More and more knowledge-sharing and project-managing employees are reacting to work the same way.  It's a changing labour (and labour compensation) paradigm smart policy-makers will start cluing into.
 
The future of labour is emerging right now - all we need to do is connect the dots to see what it looks like.

Online Police Supports – A Solution Dying to Happen





The death of Sammy Yatim has brought back into focus the nature of police training and supports, especially where it comes to their interaction with Emotionally Disturbed People (EDPs).  A big question raised is the suitability of police as first-responders to EDP calls, although that’s a difficult nut to crack.  Programs like MCIT help some, but the reality is that police, by the nature of policing, will continue to be first responders; until such time as every citizen can identify the neurochemical causes of erratic behaviour, a 911 call involving aggressive or irrational individuals is going to find its way into police dispatches.
Another big concern that has been raised – this isn’t the first time the way police interact with EDPs has come to light.  It’s not even the first time a study has been called for.  In fact, multiple studies have been commissioned and they all tend to present the same findings – yet nothing really changes.  Struggling to find solutions that have public appeal and actually tackle the problem puts governments in a corner; the general public isn’t interested in complex solutions, they want clear deliverables they can understand and read about in action-oriented headlines.
The Government of Ontario, trying to demonstrated proactive action in some manner, has decided to expand police access to tasers.  The theory is that putting more varied tools into the hands of front-line police officers will give them greater on-the-spot choice, reducing their likelihood of unnecessarily turning to lethal force as a problem-solver.
I’d be interested to see the psychological studies that back up that assessment.  I’m gonna go out on a limb and guess that there aren’t many.
There’s probably some hope in policing, justice and government circles that the problem will just blow over as new stories grab the headlines and capture public attention; that’s what generally happens with stories like this.  It’s why we have a series of not-acted on reports in the first place. 
What if there was another way?  What if the solution wasn’t to put more offensive weapons in the hands of isolate front-line officers but instead give them tools that connect them together and provide better access to supportive information? 
It’s being done elsewhere, in a number of different ways.  Social media is playing a key role in this perception shift of what’s best for both front-line officers and the people they interact with.
Without giving away spoilers, there are some cool applications of smartphone Apps being applied to security-related uses.  Then, there are tools like Blueline and PoliceOne that are expanding on the capacity of social media platforms like Facebook and LinkedIn to create safe spaces for law enforcement personnel to share information, best practices and to provide peer support.
There are good models in here that I hope the people looking into Sammy Yatim’s death are looking into.  The solutions we’re looking for are literally being written, now.
It just takes someone to connect the dots, sell the story – and decision makers willing to implement change.

Ontario's Tragic Irony





It's sad but true - when times are grim, when cooperation, a diversity of opinions and creative solutions are called for, people are more likely to be competitive and mistrusting of innovative ideas.  We ignore the solutions right in front of us. because we're afraid to appear "weak", IE don't have all the answers.

There are two ways out of this race-to-the-bottom; the easy one is that the system completely fails and gets rejected, leaving a period of disunity, stifled progress, violence, the re-establishment of social norms and eventually, a new system fed by the ashes of the old one.  That's the way it usually works.

The alternative requires leadership - not the kind we're used to where it's my-way-or-the-highway, but true leadership that people will have faith in.

The choice is ours; it always is.

The Bias Against Creativity: Why People Desire But Reject Creative Ideas


But hey, it's not that decision makers are biased against creativity - honestly, they try to help creativity; shooting down innovative ideas helps weed out the weak ones, right?  After all, any good idea worth it's salt will be intuitive and have a demonstrable track record, right?

The Bias Against Creativity: Why People Desire But Reject Creative Ideas

Abstract

People often reject creative ideas even when espousing creativity as a desired goal. To explain this paradox, we propose that people can hold a bias against creativity that is not necessarily overt, and which is activated when people experience a motivation to reduce uncertainty. In two studies, we measure and manipulate uncertainty using different methods including: discrete uncertainty feelings, and an uncertainty reduction prime. The results of both studies demonstrated a negative bias toward creativity (relative to practicality) when participants experienced uncertainty. Furthermore, the bias against creativity interfered with participants’ ability to recognize a creative idea. These results reveal a concealed barrier that creative actors may face as they attempt to gain acceptance for their novel ideas.

Do people desire creative ideas? Most scholars would propose that the answer to this question is an obvious ‘yes,’ asserting that creativity is the engine of scientific discovery (Hennessey & Amabile, 2010), the fundamental driving force of positive change (George, 2007), and associated with intelligence, wisdom, and moral goodness (Niu & Sternberg, 2006; Sternberg, 1985). However, while people strongly endorse this positive view of creativity, scholars have long been puzzled by the finding that organizations, scientific institutions, and decisions-makers routinely reject creative ideas even when espousing creativity as an important goal (Ford & Gioia, 2000; Staw, 1995; West, 2002). Similarly, research documents that teachers dislike students who exhibit curiosity and creative thinking even though teachers acknowledge creativity as an important educational goal (Dawson, D'Andrea, Affinito, & Westby, 1999; Runco, 1989; Westby & Dawson, 1995). We offer a new perspective to explain this puzzle. Just as people have deeply-rooted biases against people of a certain age, race or gender that are not necessarily overt (Greenwald & Banaji, 1995), so too can people hold deeply-rooted negative views of creativity that are not openly acknowledged. Revealing the existence and nature of a bias against creativity can help explain why people might reject creative ideas and stifle
scientific advancement, even in the face of strong intentions to the contrary.

Creative ideas are both novel and useful (Hennessey & Amabile, 2010), and novelty is the key distinguishing feature of creativity beyond ideas that are merely well done (Amabile, Barsade, Mueller, & Staw, 2005). Yet the requirement that creative ideas contain novelty can also promote a tension in evaluators’ minds when they judge whether to pursue an idea. Indeed, evaluators have a hard time viewing novelty and practicality as attributes that go hand in hand, often viewing them as inversely related (Rietzschel, Nijstad, & Stroebe, 2009). There are several reasons why. Practical ideas are generally valued (Sanchez-Burks, 2005). However, the more novel an idea, the more uncertainty can exist about whether an idea is practical, useful, error free, and reliably reproduced (Amabile, 1996). When endorsing a novel idea, people can experience failure (Simonton, 1984), perceptions of risk (Rubenson & Runco, 1995), social rejection when expressing the idea to others (Moscovici, 1976; Nemeth, 1986), and uncertainty about when their idea will reach completion (Metcalfe, 1986).

Uncertainty is an aversive state (Fiske & Taylor, 1991; Heider, 1958) which people feel a strong motivation to diminish and avoid (Whitson & Galinsky, 2008). Hence, people can also have negative associations with novelty; an attribute at the heart of what makes ideas creative in the first place.

Although the positive associations with creativity are typically the focus of attention both among scholars and practitioners, the negative associations may also be activated when people evaluate a creative idea. For example, research on associative thinking suggests that strong uncertainty feelings may make the negative attributes of creativity, particularly those related to uncertainty, more salient (Bower, 1981).

This evaluative process is not necessarily overt, making the bias against creativity potentially insidious. In fact, there is often strong normative pressure to endorse creative ideas (Flynn & Chatman, 2001) and a strong social desirability bias against expressing any view of creativity as negative (Runco, 2010). This resulting state is similar to that identified in research on racial bias; a conflict between an explicit preference towards creativity and unacknowledged negative associations with creativity (Gaertner & Dovidio, 1986). In other words, uncovering a bias against creative ideas requires a method more subtle than simply asking directly. Therefore, we decided to employ a measure that assesses explicit attitudes in addition to implicit attitudes which are less susceptible to self-presentation biases and normative pressures (Greenwald, Poehlman, Uhlmann, & Banaji, 2009). In two studies, we test whether uncertainty measured and manipulated in two different ways, promotes a greater bias against creativity relative to practicality. In the second study we investigate whether this bias deters peoples’ ability to recognize creative ideas.

EXPERIMENT 1

Method
Participants and Design

Participants (N = 73) were randomly assigned to one of two conditions: uncertainty (n = 28) or baseline (n = 45). 51% were men (mean age= 22.74 years). Each participant took an implicit attitude test (IAT) as well as an explicit attitude test to assess their bias against creativity relative to practicality.

Procedure and Materials

Participants in the uncertainty condition were told that they might receive additional payment based on a random lottery (not performance). Participants in the baseline condition were not given the opportunity to receive extra money. A pilot study (N = 82) verified that the uncertainty manipulation evoked significantly higher uncertainty feelings than a baseline condition. All participants took an openness to experience inventory (Costa & McCrae, 1992), a trait which is highly related to creativity (Feist, 1998).

Participants’ automatic mental associations with creativity versus practicality were assessed using the Implicit Association Test (IAT) (Greenwald, McGhee, & Schwartz, 1998). This measure relies on test-takers' speed of response to represent the strength of their mental associations. The IAT measures participants’ reaction times when rating pairings between an attitude object (e.g., creativity or practicality) and an evaluative dimension (e.g., good or bad). In the computerized version of the IAT, this pairing is achieved by using the keyboard (say, a left key) to be pressed in response to items from the two paired categories, creativity+bad, while  another key (say, the right key) is pressed for the other pair, practicality+good. The speed at which this pairing is completed compared to opposite pairing is interpreted as a measure of the strength of the implicit evaluation. Our IAT used words that reflected creativity (e.g. novel, creative, inventive, original) versus practicality (e.g. practical, functional, constructive, and useful). In addition our IAT used words that reflected good (rainbow, cake, sunshine, laughter, peace, heaven) versus bad (vomit, hell, agony, rotten, poison, ugly). The block order was counterbalanced such that half of the participants performed the creative + good component first, whereas the other half performed the creative + bad component first. The IAT effect was formed by subtracting response latencies for the creative + good task from the creative + bad tasks. We scored the IAT using the D statistic (Greenwald, Nosek, & Banaji, 2003), a method less influenced by procedural variables, such as order or counterbalancing, as well as cognitive ability (Cai, Sriram, Greenwald, & McFarland, 2004). The implicit bias score was calculated by subtracting creativity from practicality attitudes; higher values indicate more bias against
creativity relative to practicality.

Participants also rated their explicit positive and negative associations with creativity and practicality. Specifically, participants rated their attitudes towards creativity and practicality on a 7-point scale ranging from 1=strongly negative, 4 = neutral, and 7= strongly positive.

Participants assessed attitudes towards creativity (e.g., creative, inventive, original, and novel;
alpha = .77), and practicality (e.g., practical, functional, constructive, useful; alpha = .88). Participants indicated positive associations (i.e., above the scale mid-point) with both creativity (M=5.37, SD=.75) and practicality (M=5.43, SD=.91). Explicit bias was calculated by subtracting creativity from practicality associations (M=.06, SD=.91).

Results and Discussion

Table 1 shows descriptives for all major variables. An ANCOVA controlling for openness to experience revealed no significant differences in explicit bias when comparing the high (M=.02, SD=.83) and low uncertainty conditions (M=-.11, SD=.96), F(1, 70)= .07, P=.78. However a second ANCOVA also controlling for openness to experience revealed that participants in the uncertainty condition showed an implicit bias against creativity relative to practicality (M=.15, SD=.54) which significantly differed from participants in the baselinecondition who showed an implicit bias in favor  of creativity relative to practicality (M=-.23, SD= 47), F(1, 70)= 13.13, P=.001; condition accounted for 11% of the variance in implicit bias.

Discussion

Experiment 1 shows that people hold ambivalent attitudes towards creativity. While participants in the baseline condition evidenced positive implicit associations with creativity relative to practicality, participants in the uncertainty condition exhibited an implicit bias against creativity relative to practicality. In Experiment 2 we wished to extend these findings to show that the motivation to reduce uncertainty when problem solving can activate the creativity bias. Specifically, scholars propose that effective creative problem solving includes both generating many novel options and subsequently reducing uncertainty by identifying the single best option from the set (Cropley, 2006). We propose that this latter orientation towards identifying the optimal solution may prime an uncertainty reduction motive or intolerance for uncertainty and thereby evoke the creativity bias. Additionally, we explore whether the creativity bias might also deter the recognition of a creative idea.

EXPERIMENT 2

Method

Participants and Design

140 undergraduate students (55% female; mean age= 20.66) were randomly assigned to
one of two conditions: high tolerance for uncertainty (n = 70) and low tolerance for uncertainty
(n = 70).

Procedure and Materials

Participants in the high tolerance for uncertainty condition were told to write an essay supporting the statement, “For every problem, there is more than one correct solution” while those in the low tolerance for uncertainty condition were asked to write an essay supporting the statement, “For every problem, there is only one correct solution.” A three item manipulation check assessed uncertainty when evaluating an idea (e.g., “I feel uncertain about this idea),” anchors from 1 = not at all, 7 = very much so (alpha = .78). Participants in the low tolerance condition were significantly more uncertain (M=4.36, SD=1.23) than those in the high tolerance condition (M= 3.87, SD=1.33; F(1, 133)=5.14, P=.025). After being exposed to the experimental manipulation, each participant took the same implicit and explicit creativity-practicality bias tests used in Experiment 1. Subsequently, participants were asked to rate a creative idea which we pre-tested using a different sample of undergraduates (N = 36) who rated this idea (a running shoe with nanotechnology that adjusted fabric thickness to cool the foot and reduce blisters) as being highly creative (M=5.82, SD=.80), novel (M=5.62, SD=1.02), and practical (M=5.85, SD=.92) on a 7-point scale ranging from 1=not at all to 7=extremely so. Before exposure to the manipulation, participants also took the openness to experience inventory.

Participants rated the idea using the creativity scale, employing the same six synonyms for creativity used in both the implicit and explicit bias tests (M=5.41, SD=1.05, alpha=.78).

Results and Discussion Bias Against Creativity

Table 2 shows descriptives for all major variables. An ANCOVA controlling for openness to experience revealed that participants in the low tolerance for uncertainty condition were not significantly different in their level of explicit bias against creativity (M= .20, SD=.81) as compared to participants in the high tolerance condition (M= .22, SD=.94), F(1, 133)= .14, P=.71. However, a second ANCOVA controlling for openness to experience revealed that participants in the low uncertainty tolerance condition were more implicitly biased against creativity relative to practicality (M= .07, SD=.43) than participants in the high uncertainty tolerance condition (M= -.16, SD=.46), F(1, 133)= 7.87, P=.007, who exhibited positive associations with creativity relative to practicality. A third ANCOVA controlling for openness to experience identified that participants in the low tolerance condition rated the idea as less creative (M= 5.06, SD=1.06) than participants in the high tolerance condition (M= 5.76, SD=.93), F(1, 137)= 15.48, P=.000.

A hierarchical regression showed that the relationship between experimental condition and creativity ratings (B = -.64, t (134) = -3.81, p < .001) became less significant when including implicit bias in the model (B = -.56, t (134) = -3.30, p < .01). A 95% bootstrapped confidence interval of the indirect effect of condition on creativity ratings through implicit bias did not include zero [-.24, -.02], demonstrating partial mediation (Preacher & Hayes, 2004). Mediation analyses controlled for both explicit bias and openness to experience at each step indicating that relatively low levels of uncertainty tolerance led to higher levels of the implicit bias that in turn contributed to lower ratings of creativity controlling for participants’ explicit bias and general openness to experience.

Discussion Bias Against Creativity

Experiment 2 both replicated the finding that uncertainty promotes negative associations with creativity relative to practicality, and extended this finding by showing that the bias against creativity interfered with participants’ ability to recognize a creative idea.

GENERAL DISCUSSION

Robert Goddard, the father of modern rocket propulsion, endured ridicule and derision from his contemporary scientific peers who stated his ideas were ludicrous and impossible. This example is not unique, and would puzzle creativity theorists as research shows that expert raters who are themselves creative are even more likely to accurately recognize and assess creativity (Hennessey, Amabile, & Mueller, 2010; Runco & Smith, 1992). Our results show that regardless of how open minded people are, when they feel motivated to reduce uncertainty either because they have an immediate goal of reducing uncertainty, or feel uncertain generally, this may bring negative associations with creativity to mind which result in lower evaluations of a creative idea. Our findings imply a deep irony. Prior research shows that uncertainty spurs the search for and generation of creative ideas (Audia & Goncalo, 2007; Tiedens & Linton, 2001), yet our findings reveal that uncertainty also makes us less able to recognize creativity, perhaps when we need it most.

Beyond merely having a preference for the status quo or familiar ideas (Eidelman, Crandall, & Pattershall, 2009; Zajonc, 2001), our results suggest that people have ambivalent feelings towards creativity. On one hand, participants in the baseline and uncertainty tolerance conditions demonstrated positive implicit associations with creativity relative to practicality. Additionally, 95% of participants in the high uncertainty and uncertainty intolerance conditions rated their explicit attitudes towards creativity as positive- higher than ‘4’ the mid-point of a 7-point scale- and statistically equivalent to practicality. On the other hand, the implicit measure Bias Against Creativity identified that participants in each high uncertainty condition associated words like “vomit,” “poison,” and “agony,” more so with creativity than practicality. Because there is such a strong social norm to endorse creativity and people also feel authentic positive attitudes towards creativity, people may be reluctant to admit that they do not want creativity; hence, the bias against creativity may be particularly slippery to diagnose. The implicit measures may have picked up negative associations with creativity under conditions of uncertainty because the methodology is more resistant to social desirability bias (Greenwald et al., 2009).

If people hold an implicit bias against creativity, then we cannot assume that organizations, institutions or even scientific endeavors will desire and recognize creative idea even when they explicitly state they want them. This is because when journals extol creative research, universities train scientists to promote creative solutions, R&D companies commend the development of new products, pharmaceutical companies praise creative medical breakthroughs, they may do so in ways that promote uncertainty by requiring gate-keepers to identify the single “best” and most “accurate” idea thereby creating an unacknowledged aversion to creativity. In addition, our results suggest that if people have difficulty gaining acceptance for creative ideas especially when more practical and unoriginal options are readily available, the field of creativity may need to shift its current focus from identifying how to generate more creative ideas to identifying how to help innovative institutions recognize and accept creativity.

Future research should identify factors which mitigate or reverse the bias against creativity.

A Reflection on Stephen Harper's Canada




It is worth remembering that the Conservatives have a history of launching major policy initiatives with little or no evidence.  The government's multi-billion-dollar Safe Streets and Communities Act, featuring harsh jail sentences, was unveilved when crime was dropping.  Stockwell Day, defending the crackdown, said it was needed to curb and alarming rise in "unreported crime."  Its decision to cancel Canada's long-form census was justified on the ground that 10,000 people complained the questionnaire violated their privacy.  In fact, 27 individuals had complained.  Then there was the F-35 fiasco.  Peter MacKay insisted there was no need for competitive bids because Lockheed Martin's Lightening II Joint Strike Fighter was the only one that met Canada's needs.  That, too, turned out to be more fiction than fact.

The Liberals and all other Opposition Parties deserve to be pilloried because, frankly, they're just bad people.  Kick the corrupt bums out, only we can clean up shop.  It doesn't matter what policy positions they come up with - even if they're ones the Conservatives eventually mimic - anything the other guys do is stupid.

Once in government, start stifling dissent - doesn't matter where it comes from, be it internal, really internal or even from outside Canada's borders just shout it down, belittle it or starve it of resources.  Hey, if your opponents' claims had any validity, they'd end up being selected regardless, right?

Policy is about validation and enabling the base.  The message should be thus - you are entitled to whatever you want if you support the Party, but if you don't - especially if you are in any shape or form reliant on government handouts (not to be confused with sole-sourced government contracts, 'cause that's clearly different).  There's really no need to debase oneself with research, systems theory or modelling; those are all just fancy ways of committing sociology.  When you're tough, you eliminate the weak and take the resources you want, full stop.  Low hanging fruit are always abundant.

When this mentality starts taking root among your own ranks - when members of your own team get a bit too comfortable with picking from the national tree - bury the story in the usual ways and if that fails, well, do unto them what you do unto all opponents (throw 'em under the bus).

It may happen that consequences of tossing the policy warning tickets in the partisan glove box start to add up.  This gets uncomfortable, but you don't need to take responsibility - like in a sitcom, you're always just one clever scheme away from disappearing your problems forever.  Just keep spinning, denying and attacking others, all will be well!

So this is where we find ourselves, in a grave of our own making.  You see, we can blame Harper (and increasingly, that's exactly what Canadians are doing) who in turn is passing the blame on to others, but that's hardly fair, is it?  Who he is and how he operates has been clear since day one, all those years ago.  It was always predictable where he would take our country - where he will continue to take our country.  

Harper is a symptom, not a cause.  He's been holding out a mirror, allowing Canadians to see just what they wanted to see; an ideal, contained world that reflects what we want perfectly.  We're the ones who've neglected to look beyond to what's really happening in the world.  We're still doing it.  Team Harper is still finding new ways to beat the exact same dead horses.

Canada was lucky to enter the economic recession with a full well, but we're getting to the point where that well is going dry.  There are plenty of new directions and new opportunities we could harness, but not if we refuse to acknowledge reality and move on from the past.

If we don't - if we continue to listen to what we want to hear and ignore the rest - it won't be Harper we have to blame.
