Humans are creatures of patterned behaviour. We base what comes next on what came before and our experience of how things follow in sequence. Horror films are like this - we know something bad it going to happen to the girl in the shower, 'cause that's the way horror films work.
Great manipulators of emotion understand this cognitive cadence and, when they want to get your focus, get your attention, strip away your self-control and get a gut reaction, they learn to switch gears at unexpected times, keeping you off balance.
