“On the other hand, because of the cost and visa requirements to get here, I don’t think it will be floodgates,” he said. “And certainly with my experience with LGBT refugee claimants … it’s never been like a boat load of people coming here to Canada. It’s always singly, or possibly a couple.”
Good on Chris Alexander for stepping on the right side of history. It's more important than we realize at this moment to take this stand now - and to do so publicly. There's a chance that the time will come again when we will be seeing refugees by the boatloads fleeing persecution in Europe and beyond.
Hopefully, Canada has learned from past mistakes on this front and won't be turning away boatloads of people in need again.
Abandoning people in their hour of need - that's not what Canada is about. Hopefully, that's something we can all agree on.
